No. 4 Alabama removed any doubt about its College Football Playoff worthiness and avenged last year’s title-game loss with a 24-6 victory over No. 1 Clemson in the Sugar Bowl on Monday night in New Orleans. Alabama broke the game open in the third quarter with a pair of interceptions of Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant that put 14 points on the board for the Crimson Tide in 14 seconds. Alabama (12-1) advance to the National Championship Game January 8 for an all-SEC matchup with No. 3 Georgia.

Alabama and Georgia won their College Football Playoff semifinals on Monday and will meet in the national championship next week in Atlanta, the home of the Southeastern Conference title game.

"Couldn't have scripted it better in some ways," SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. "It will be one of the sweetest drives from Birmingham (Alabama, where the SEC offices are located) to Atlanta that we've ever experienced."

The fourth-ranked Crimson Tide smothered No. 1 Clemson 24-6 in their Sugar Bowl rubber match after the third-ranked Bulldogs won the first overtime in Rose Bowl history, a wild 54-48 victory that eliminated No. 2 Oklahoma and Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield.

It will be the second time in seven seasons that the national title will come down to two SEC teams. Alabama beat LSU in New Orleans to win the 2011 championship.

At least this all-SEC affair next Monday night won't be a rematch: Georgia and Alabama did not play in 2017.

Both will be making a return trip to Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Alabama started its season in the shiny new home of the Atlanta Falcons by beating Florida State. The Tide hoped it would be the first of three trips to Atlanta, but it let the second one slip away. Alabama's regular-season finale loss at Auburn cost the Tide the SEC West and spot in the conference title game against Georgia.

Two SEC teams, Georgia and Alabama, will meet on Monday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to decide college football's national champion.

It's the culmination of a 2017 season which saw both teams spend some time at No. 1. Georgia knocked off Oklahoma in a Rose Bowl double-overtime thriller to get here, while Alabama handled Clemson in the Orange Bowl.

AP PREVIEW: Alabama and Georgia showed that talk of the Southeastern Conference losing some of its might was very much overblown.

At least at the top, the SEC still owns bragging rights in college football.

A ninth national title in the past 12 seasons is for the conference as the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs meet Monday night in the heart of SEC country at Atlanta's new $1.6 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Alabama, playing in its third straight College Football Playoff championship game, is seeking its fifth national title in nine years under coach Nick Saban.

Georgia, which hired former Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kirby Smart away from Alabama two years ago, is trying to join the recent list of SEC winners after not claiming the national championship since the 1980 season.

"I'm proud of the SEC and I'm proud of the competition in our league," Saban said. "Kirby has done a great job and has Georgia playing really well."
