Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is gearing up to stage its next pay-per-view (PPV) offering, as UFC 222 is locked and loaded for March 3, 2018 inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The event will feature a women’s Featherweight title bout between current division champion Cris Cyborg taking on Invicta FC women’s Bantamweight queen, Yana Kunitskaya. It’s a short notice championship bout that came to be after Max Holloway was forced out of his 145-pound title tile against Frankie Edgar.
Cris Cyborg will face Yana Kunitskaya in the main event of UFC 222. MMAjunkie has confirmed with a source close to the situation that Cyborg will defend her title against Kunitskaya at the event. The UFC has yet to officially announce the fight.
The co-main event for the card is Frankie Edgar vs. Brian Ortega, with Ortega stepping in for Max Holloway who was injured. The bout will be a title eliminator.
UFC 222 takes place on March 3rd from Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card airs live on PPV after prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
Cyborg (19-1-0-1NC) is making the second defense of her championship, last defending it against former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm at UFC 219. Cyborg is also a former Invicta FC Featherweight Champion and former Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight Champion, defeating Marloes Coenen and Gina Carano to win both belts. Cyborg has only seen one fight go the distance in the last nine-plus years and that was the bout against Holm at UFC 219.
Kunitskaya (10-3-0-1NC) is making her UFC debut in this fight and does so having won two of her last five fights. Kunitskaya is a former Invicta FC Bantamweight Champion, having defeated Raquel Pa’aluhi by unanimous decision at Invicta FC 25 to win the strap. Kunitskaya has only seen two of her professional MMA fights go the distance and the competitor has a 1-1-0 record in those contests.
In the co-main event, former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar is going to be taking on #3 ranked Brian Ortega.
