UFC 222 preview

The original main event was Max Holloway defending the featherweight title against Frankie Edgar. Holloway had to bow out of the fight due to a leg injury. After a few days of uncertainty of whether Edgar would stay on the show, the undefeated Ortega agreed to a new UFC contract and took the bout.

The UFC still needed a headlining fight; the company attempted to book a rematch between bantamweight titleholder TJ Dillashaw against former champion Cody Garbrandt. While Garbrandt accepted the bout, Dillashaw refused. He said the recent birth of his first child, not currently training and believing that Garbrandt didn't deserve a rematch at this time. So, the UFC reached out to Cyborg and Kunitskaya and the bout was quickly made.

Cyborg (19-1, 1NC) will have the shortest turnaround in her career by going 63 days between her UFC 219 unanimous decision victory over Holly Holm.

Kunitskaya (10-3, 1NC) is the former Invicta FC bantamweight champion, having defeated previous Cyborg opponent Tonya Evinger in Mar. 2017. She made one defense of her title, defeating Raquel Pa'aluhi back in August.

In the past, Cyborg's fighting style not being suited to go five rounds was a major knock on her game. She altered the narrative in the Holm fight by changing her style and becoming more of a complete fighter. If Kunitskaya is going to win, she's going to have to win by knockout: the 28-year-old has seven knockouts in her 10 victories.
